YARDLEY, PA – I-295 WB will be restricted to a single-travel lane for up to four days next week – weather permitting — in the vicinity of the PA Route 332/Yardley-Newtown Road interchange (Exit 8), the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission announced today.
Travel delays are possible at any time, but severe congestion and delays are likeliest during weekday evening commuting periods Monday through Wednesday. Because of this, the Bridge Commission is urging motorists who make their daily “reverse commutes” through the affected I-295 WB segment to adjust their driving schedules, or allow additional time to reach their destinations, or plan alternate routes.
The single-lane pattern is need to allow for a “high-intensity construction cycle” (HICC) involving excavation, milling and paving work on a section of I-295 WB between Quarry Road and the Newtown-Yardley exit in Lower Makefield, PA. Set up of the HICC is scheduled to begin 10 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25. Upon implementation during the overnight hours, the single-lane travel pattern (instead of the normal two lanes) is expected to remain in place without interruption until 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29.
The roadway construction work is part of the Scudder Falls Bridge Replacement Project, which is on track to reach substantial completion late next year. This new phase of project work will be conducted with two 10-hour shifts. The remaining 4 hours each day will allow for cooling of newly laid asphalt or for making changes in the single-lane travel pattern as the deep-depth roadway construction work progresses.
All entry and exit ramps at the I-295/Newtown-Yardley exit are expected to remain open through the HICC period.
If the planned travel restriction gets postponed due to rain, it will be rescheduled for the following week.
