Yes. As part of the public involvement process for composing the project's Environmental Assessment, the Commission was asked to consider strategies (alternatives) for managing transportation demand and increasing the safety and efficiency of the existing transportation system (Transportation Systems Management/Transportation Demand Management). As a result of this alternatives study, accommodation for bus rapid transit systems has been included in the proposed action. The project's preferred alternative calls for a 14-foot inside shoulder along the entire 4.4-mile length of the I-95 project area, including the replacement Scudder Falls Bridge. The shoulder would be wide enough to handle proposed Route 1 Bus Rapid Transit service and other future bus rapid transit vehicles during periods of congestion on the I-95 travel lanes.
There are benefits to enhancing public transportation in the region, particularly during peak travel hours, and this improvement project will address the feasibility of accommodating BRT on the Bridge and along I-95 in the project area. The Commission evaluated the Lower Makefield Township park-and-ride lot located just south of the Bridge along Taylorsville Road, a facility that is owned by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and maintained by the Commission. This park-and-ride lot could accommodate transit vehicles as well as automobiles.
