The Central Jersey Transportation Forum (CJTF) was created under the guidance of the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) to serve as a regional organization for addressing transportation and mobility issues. The CJTF is comprised of the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT), New Jersey Transit (NJ TRANSIT), municipal governments, regional planning authorities, employers and interested citizens. Last year, the CJTF conducted a transit study of the Route 1 Corridor in New Jersey in Mercer and Middlesex Counties that concluded that a Bus Rapid Transit system could attract sufficient ridership and that it warranted further analysis. BRT is a technologically advanced public transportation system that uses vehicles on shared roadways or its own dedicated right-of-way. NJ TRANSIT is now conducting an Alternative Analysis study to evaluate the feasibility of a BRT system on the Route 1 Corridor in central New Jersey.

The initial CJTF study indicated that a core BRT system would extend parallel to Route 1 between I-95/I-295 and Ridge Road. Feeder bus connections are envisioned from surrounding counties, including Bucks County, Pennsylvania, perhaps using I-95 and the Scudder Falls Bridge. The Commission is aware of the BRT studies and analyses and is an active participant on the CJTF. There are benefits to enhancing public transportation in the region, particularly during peak travel hours, and this improvement project will address the feasibility of accommodating BRT on the Bridge and along I-95 in the study area. The Commission recently evaluated the Lower Makefield Township park-and-ride lot located just south of the Bridge along Taylorsville Road, a facility that is owned by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PENNDOT) and maintained by the Commission. This park-and-ride lot could accommodate transit vehicles as well as automobiles.
